Upon arrival in Kathmandu,
you will be greeted with flower garlands at the airport and then transported to
your hotel.
After breakfast, we will be
heading to Pokhara, which is a 7-hour drive away. We will stop for lunch on the
way. After lunch, we expect to arrive around 2 pm in the picturesque valley of
Pokhara. Pokhara is a place of remarkable natural beauty. After a brief rest,
we will be near the lake.
After having breakfast, we
will drive to Kande from Pokhara, which takes about 40 minutes. The trail
involves a 1.5-hour climb to reach the ridge at 2,060 m. Once we reach the
ridge, we'll come across a quaint lodge settlement known as the 'Australian
Camp', which offers a stunning panoramic view of the Annapurna range and
Pokhara valley. The trail then leads through a scenic rhododendron forest to a
mountain pass called 'Deurali'. From Deurali, we can enjoy breathtaking views
of the Modi Khola valley, nestled between Annapurna South and Mardi Himal/Mt.
Fishtail. (B/L/D)
The trail gradually climbs
through the rhododendron forest following the ridge. The lower camp has a
couple of teahouses in the forest clearing. From there, you can enjoy a closer
view of Mt. Fishtail and Mardi Himal. You'll also find yourself closer to a
clear blue sky with a view of layers of Himalayan foothills and a sweeping
valley towards the south. (B/L/D)
After breakfast, we will
begin our trek from Low Camp to High Camp (3,900m), where you can enjoy views
of snow-capped mountains such as South Annapurna, Himchuli, and Machhapuchhre,
also known as Fishtail. We will hike uphill along the Nangge Danda to High Camp
at an altitude of 3,900 meters, where we will stay overnight. (B/L/D)
The day trip will be more
challenging than other days, involving a steep climb and longer walk. The trail
becomes more steep and dizzying at some points, with uneven and steep rocky
steps. The initial steep climb will take about 2 hours to reach the ridge top,
marked as MBC (Mardi Himal Base Camp). However, it will take about another 2
hours along the ridge to reach the actual base camp. The view along the ridge
is amazing. Mardi Himal and Mt Fishtail will appear right above us, while the
view of Annapurna I, Gangapurna, and Annapurna III will also be visible in the
distance. (B/L/D)
Wake up early in the
morning to watch the fabulous sunrise. Have breakfast and then take a walk down
to Forest Camp. (B/L/D)

The Mardi Himal Trek is a lesser-known yet stunning trekking route located in the Annapurna region of Nepal. This trek takes you to the base of Mardi Himal, which sits at an elevation of 5,587 meters (18,330 feet). The trek is renowned for its breathtaking views of the Annapurna massif, lush forests, and charming villages, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural experiences. Typically, the trek can be completed in about 9 to 13 days.
Some of the key highlights of the Mardi Himal Trek include:
Stunning Views: Experience spectacular views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machapuchare (Fishtail), and Mardi Himal.
Beautiful Landscapes: Trek through diverse landscapes, including terraced fields, dense forests of rhododendron and oak, and alpine meadows.
Cultural Encounters: Visit local Gurung and Magar villages, where you can experience the rich culture and hospitality of the local people.
Less Crowded: Compared to other popular treks in the Annapurna region, Mardi Himal offers a more tranquil experience with fewer trekkers.
The best times to trek to Mardi Himal are during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). In spring, you can enjoy blooming rhododendrons and pleasant weather, while autumn offers clear skies and stable conditions. The monsoon season (June to August) is typically avoided due to heavy rain, and winter (December to February) can be cold with snowfall at higher altitudes, making trekking conditions challenging.
The Mardi Himal Trek is considered moderate in terms of difficulty. While it doesn’t require technical climbing skills, trekkers should have a good level of fitness as the trek involves several days of walking, steep ascents, and altitude gain. Regular physical activity leading up to your trek can help improve your endurance. It’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional if you have any existing health concerns.
While it is possible to trek independently, many trekkers choose to join an organized group or hire a guide. This enhances safety and provides insights into the local culture and environment. Additionally, obtaining permits is required, which can be easier to manage with a guide.
Accommodation along the Mardi Himal Trek primarily consists of teahouses and lodges. These range from basic to more comfortable options, offering shared facilities. While bedding is usually provided, it’s advisable to bring a sleeping bag for added warmth, especially at higher altitudes. The hospitality of the lodge owners often adds to the trekking experience.
Altitude sickness can affect trekkers above 2,500 meters (8,200 feet). To minimize the risk, ascend gradually, stay well-hydrated, and pay attention to any symptoms such as headaches, nausea, or dizziness. If symptoms arise, it’s crucial to descend to a lower altitude immediately and seek medical assistance if needed. Having a knowledgeable guide can help monitor your condition and provide necessary support.
The Mardi Himal region is home to diverse ethnic communities, primarily Gurungs. Respecting local customs and traditions is essential. Dress modestly when visiting villages and be open to engaging with locals. Learning a few basic phrases in Nepali can enhance your interactions and show appreciation for their culture.
