Edward and Sophie to embark on royal tour to Himalayan nation of Nepal

The Duchess of Edinburgh, Sophie, commenced her six-day official visit to Nepal on the morning of February 4, 2025, arriving at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. She was received by officials from Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and staff from the British Embassy. Following her arrival, the Duchess proceeded to the British Embassy in Lainchaur.
Her husband, Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, is scheduled to arrive in Kathmandu later today, traveling from Delhi, while the Duchess traveled from London. This visit aims to strengthen the longstanding ties between the United Kingdom and Nepal.

Over the past year, the Duke and Duchess have solidified their roles within the monarchy, especially during periods when other senior members faced health challenges. The King visited Nepal in 1998, then as the Prince of Wales, and both of Edward's parents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, the late Duke of Edinburgh, traveled there in 1986. The late Queen and Prince Philip also visited Nepal in 1961, during which they participated in a tiger hunt organized by King Mahendra near Kathmandu. Due to an infected finger, Prince Philip was unable to join the hunt.
The most recent significant royal visit to Nepal was by the Duke of Sussex. Prince Harry made an official trip to Nepal in 2016 to mark the bicentenary of the Nepal-UK relationship, four years before he stepped down as a senior working royal.
During her visit, the Duchess of Edinburgh is expected to engage in various activities aimed at bolstering the UK-Nepal relationship.
